Mulch suppresses weeds by forming a physical barrier that blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds. Without light, most weed seeds are unable to germinate or grow, reducing the number of unwanted plants in garden beds.

The best soil for laying turf is a sandy loam that combines good drainage with moderate nutrient retention. This type of soil allows turf roots to establish quickly and access both water and nutrients efficiently.

Adding a layer of turf underlay or blended topsoil can help provide the ideal growing conditions. After laying, the turf should be watered thoroughly and kept moist during the establishment phase.

Gravel is often used around succulents, cacti, or Mediterranean-style plantings that prefer dry conditions. It also enhances the visual appeal of modern or minimalist gardens. 

When using gravel in garden beds, it’s helpful to install a weed mat or landscape fabric underneath to prevent the gravel from mixing with the soil.
